As I reported a couple of days ago, the movie phenomenon that is Avengers: Infinity War is going to launch on 4K Blu-ray on August 14th. This should make the 14th a real red letter day for fans of the Marvel cinematic universe. Especially as Disney has revealed that the film will ship on disc with a Dolby Atmos soundtrack and lots of extra features lớn go with 4K Blu-ray’s high dynamic range/wide màu sắc spectrum pictures.

Unfortunately, though, it now transpires that AV fans are going to have khổng lồ brace themselves for a couple of significant và surprising disappointments.

Strange company...

First of all, Disney has confirmed lớn me that the film will not be available on 4K Blu-ray in the premium Dolby Vision format. Instead you’ll only be able lớn watch it in the industry standard HDR10 format. So Dolby Vision-capable displays won’t be able khổng lồ take advantage of the format’s extra scene by scene picture information.

It’s not uncommon, of course, for 4K Blu-rays not khổng lồ offer Dolby Vision support. However, DV has appeared on a number of previous Marvel Studios releases, including Spider-Man: HomecomingBlack Panther. So even though it wasn’t included on the 4K Blu-ray of Thor: Ragnarok, it had been widely expected that Dolby Vision would appear on Infinity War’s 4K Blu-ray. Especially as Disney had already confirmed that Dolby Vision would be supported on the film’s ‘Digital’ (streaming) release.

I’ve asked Disney for an explanation of why it’s stepped back from Dolby Vision for the Infinity War 4K Blu-ray, & if I get an answer I’ll update this story.

The other thing likely to lớn upset at least some quarters of Marvel’s fan base is the apparent lack of any tư vấn for the IMAX shooting ratio on any of the Infinity Wars’ home video releases.

As I covered in a story a few weeks ago, Marvel fans have mix up a petition asking Disney to lớn start delivering 4K Blu-rays of Marvel films with at least the option to watch sequences shot using the large-format IMAX system in their original aspect ratio, rather than only being able to watch the straight 2.39:1 ratio created for non-IMAX cinemas.

Disney’s press release on Avengers: Infinity War, though, stated that the film was going to be sticking with the 2.39:1 ratio on 4K Blu-ray. And now reliable sources are confirming what was at hinted at in the press release: namely that even the film’s 3d Blu-ray release will not support the IMAX ratio, despite previous 3d Marvel releases doing so.

It should be stressed, of course, that it’s entirely possible - probable, even - that the picture chất lượng of the Avengers: Infinity War disc releases will still look excellent even without tư vấn for Dolby Vision or IMAX ratios.

The lack of Dolby Vision tư vấn won"t matter khổng lồ people without Dolby Vision displays either, & not everyone likes films switching to IMAX ratio (though actually there would likely be no such switching on an IMAX ratio version of Infinity War, as for once pretty much the whole film was shot in IMAX).

Putting Dolby Vision on the disc, though, wouldn"t have stopped it playing as HDR10 into non-Dolby Vision displays. Và it would be nice if people who wanted the IMAX ratio had at least some way of getting their hands on it, as has happened in the past.

Let"s just hope that Disney doesn’t make it a trio of disappointments by partnering Infinity War on Blu-ray và 4K Blu-ray with another one of the strangely compressed audio tracks covered in this separate story.
